The Limits of 3D Printing

While 3D printing has changed the face of manufacturing and production, it is not a substitute for manufacturing and will not render traditional factories obsolete. According to PVMI member Matthias Holweg in Harvard Business Review, scale, learning, cost, and customization limitations prevent 3D printing from being widely adopted in place of existing manufacturing, and it should instead be seen as a complement with unique capabilities of its own.
