Volkswagen’s manipulation of emissions data has already resulted in a recall of millions of cars, the resignation of its CEO, Martin Winterkorn, and the suspension of at least 10 senior executives. Beyond that, society will also have to deal with the additional fallout from Volkswagen’s underinvestment in hybrid and electric vehicle technology, points out PVMI Director John Paul MacDuffie in this Knowledge@Wharton “Knowledge in 5” segment. Nevertheless, MacDuffie says, “Volkswagen is too big to fail in the sense that it has a diverse enough set of markets.”
