This PVMI professional development workshop is the sixth in a series of PDWs beginning in 2011, which have generated standing room only crowds and a special issue of Industrial and Corporate Change on innovation in the global automotive industry, published in June 2015.
We aim to continue to develop management research in the broader automotive and transportation sectors with the goal of identifying emerging themes of common interest with an eye toward another special issue in the next two to three years. Our specific focus this year is understanding the organizational implications of the emergence of alternative fuels and alternative modes of transportation.
For the AOM 2016 conference, we are taking advantage of the agglomeration of automotive and transportation- related organizations in California that are at the forefront of innovation in the areas of alternative fuels and autonomous vehicles. Our speakers include industry practitioners, leaders of policy making bodies and academic researchers. We will hear from Honda’s North American Marketing Director for alternative fuel vehicles, the director of the California Fuel Cell Partnership, a member of the California Air Resources Board, and the director of the E4 Mobility Alliance of the LA Economic Development Corporation.
This PDW is held in collaboration with a second workshop: “Beyond the (Traditional) Automobile Part 2: New Capabilities and New Paradigm?” (Saturday, Aug 6, 2016, 2:15PM – 4:15PM at Hilton Anaheim in Catalina 3). This second PDW will explore the risk faced by traditional automobile manufacturers due to entry by firms with new technologies (such as alternative fuels and autonomous vehicles) which may devalue their standing capabilities.
